Within the scope of our project, we aim to raise awareness about the negative effects of child labour in Türkiye. Therefore, we held our first event in Çanakkale on June 12, the International World Day Against Child Labour. In our children’s gathering carried out with the participation of more than 1300 children, we ensured that children had a pleasant day with outdoor activities, child-friendly games and activities.
Child Labour in Türkiye
Prevention and elimination of child labour in all sectors have long been a national aim in Türkiye. According to the 2009 data of TURKSTAT, service sector has the highest concentration of child labour among all sectors. Children working in the industry sector constitute 24% of economically active children. Children in street conditions (children working, living in the streets) is a grave problem.
In this regard, we organized a children's gathering as part of the awareness-raising activities of our project.
We Held an Enjoyable Event with More than 1300 Children!
We held our public gathering at Hamidiye Tabyalar Park located in the city center of Çanakkale. The easy-access location of the park, which provides a safe playground for the children and has a suitable infrastructure for audio and sound systems was influential in its selection.
Organized as part of the 12 June World Day against Child Labour, the event was held on June 12 this year as it fell on a Sunday when the schools were closed and the weather conditions were suitable for the event to be held outdoors. The event venue was prepared to allow children to enter the area as of 13.00 and was open to children until 17.30. During the event, music was broadcast for children in the playgrounds through the sound system installed in the area.
We Gathered with Children of All Ages
Children of a wide range of ages ranging from 5 to 15 years showed interest in our event. We managed to attract the attention of children living in the region by choosing to hold the event in a public park.
We Organized an Accessible Event
In order to make the event accessible to all children and participants, a sign language interpreter was on the stage throughout the event. The interpreter was also featured on the LED screen positioned behind the platform.
A professional photographer was present throughout the event. Children's privacy was respected when taking photos, we asked for verbal consent from both the children and their accompanying parents before taking any photos.
Waste Management
Owing to the recycling bins placed in the event venue, both event waste management and children's awareness of recycling were ensured.
Our Gifts Made Children Happy
A cloth drawstring bag containing a t-shirt, hat and a thermos was gifted to the children participating in the event. While choosing promotional materials, attention was paid to selecting durable materials that children can use in their daily lives.
